At the time, his music was never more widely copied and covered, courtesy of the British invasion bands streaming into the U.S. in person and on record, yet he couldn’t chart a single or get top bookings in the U.S. Chuck Berry in London has its feet planted in 1965, offering harder blues-based numbers like “Why Should We End This Way” and “I Got a Booking,” both influenced by Big Bill Broonzy (the latter, in particular, is Berry’s rewrite of “Key to the Highway”), along with lean hot rockers like “St. Louis Blues” and the loud, sneering “I Want to Be Your Driver.” The latter was a clear influence on Bob Dylan’s “Obviously Five Believers,” and demonstrates that Berry was still an influence on rock & roll as late as 1965. Therein lies the beauty of this record — it shows Berry evolving as a singer and guitar player, exploring sides of his music and persona in a very contemporary way, and not at all awkwardly. Dave Berry/One Dozen Berrys $16.78 This CD is a wonderful surprise from Beat Goes On. Not that Dave Berry didn’t deserve the reissue of his first two albums, but neither Dave Berry nor its follow-up, One Dozen Berrys, was remotely the best album — or even among the better albums — to come out of the mid-’60s British beat boom. Berry’s heart was in the right place when it came to R&B and rock & roll, and he had a voice, but as a stylist he was at a disadvantage to rivals such as Chris Farlowe and Zoot Money. Still, he had some good instincts (when he followed them) and a strangely compelling sound, courtesy of producer Mike Smith and an array of musicians who, in addition to Frank Miles from his own band the Cruisers, included Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan. The mix of country and pop sounds juxtaposed with serious R&B (including the killer “I Love You Babe” and the wrenchingly compelling “Baby, It’s You”) may be off-putting, but that diversity is more a sign of the times in which these two albums were made than any indication of weakness in the execution — truth is, the diversity of sounds here calls up flashes of the Beatles, even if Berry doesn’t make the switch in genres as smoothly as the Liverpool quartet did. Even the presence of ballads such as “The Girl from the Fair Isle” isn’t a disadvantage — Paul McCartney was putting the same kind of material onto the Beatles’ albums by way of Meredith Willson songs — and followed by the searing blues-rocker “Go On Home,” it’s not a bad showcase for Berry’s range. Ultimately, “Go On Home” must be considered one of the cuts that makes this CD worth every cent, and the ballad is an unexpected bonus. Even the next number, a rhythm guitar-driven slow ballad called “Everybody Tries,” is a perfect little beat-era soft rocker of the kind that the Roulettes or any number of serious bands did on their albums. The notes by John Firminger stay very close to the two albums at hand and their production. The sound is excellent, and considering what the original vinyl versions of either of these albums would cost today, the CD is a bargain. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Chuck Berry in London/Fresh Berrys $14.98 The 26 songs here, recorded in 1964 and 1965, constituted the tail-end of Chuck Berry’s first stay at Chess Records, which had begun a decade earlier with “Maybelline.” This material slots into the same period as his appearance on the T.A.M.I. Show doing “Nadine”; little here is as well-known as “Nadine,” but not because it isn’t worth hearing. Apart from “It Wasn’t Me” (featuring Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield), none of these songs have been extensively anthologized, and all are among the least known of his work for Chess. And that is a pity, because it shows Berry — amid the flurry of activity surrounding his songs, growing out of the British Invasion — making a concerted effort to evolve his music in new directions. Whether it was the knowledge that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and company had given his career a new lease on life, after the setbacks and jailings in the early ’60s, or just a natural progression on his part, Berry seemed to take his lead from the Stones, moving toward a more self-consciously bluesy sound, drawing freely on such familiar fare as “Key to the Highway” (on “I Got a Booking”) and “St. Louis Blues,” and writing in a more distinctly blues idiom. He still tried for a rock sound on occasion, as on “His Daughter Caroline,” “You Came a Long Way from St. Louis,” and “Dear Dad,” a car song that borrows its break from “Too Pooped to Pop” but sounds like a throwback here. There are a couple of good but unexceptional instrumentals (nothing like his dizzying work on Two Great Guitars or Concerto in B Goode), and even a couple of Latin-flavored pieces like on the older albums, but the music and the performances are all tighter and leaner, and the singing more mature, and all of it just a tiny bit slowed down so that the listener could luxuriate in the playing. Berry had no way of knowing it then, especially as these albums didn’t really sell all that well, but he did provide inspiration for the next wave of rock musicians, specifically with “I Want to Be Your Driver,” which Bob Dylan used as his jumping-off point for “Obviously Five Believers” from Blonde on Blonde. These records didn’t sell well and weren’t played that often, and evidently MCA in the U.S. hasn’t even considered reissuing them domestically, so for most listeners, this CD will amount to newly discovered prime Chuck Berry. The sound is clean but loud, the textures rough and raunchy, and the notes reasonably informative. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

For people who live without diabetes, it is difficult to understand how the disease impacts the flow of everyday life. Each day starts with a  "Stick" and a drop of blood. à "Stick" is the term we use to describe a lancet to pierce the skin and draw a drop of blood for blood glucose testing.
