Infertility Levels – How Different Conditions Affect Fertility
When you discover you are having trouble conceiving, there are a number of options available to you.
A physician can help you to understand your infertility levels and what this means for your treatment and chances of conceiving. Different people can have different responses to treatment and infertility levels will be lessened or overcome when the best option for your condition and individual circumstances is fully understood and treated appropriately.
Understanding infertility levels
Approximately 10 to 15% of couples in the peak infertility age group will have trouble conceiving. There are many different problems that can cause this issue to arise. Both male and female partners could have issues with fertility, leading to infertility levels at which they are unable to conceive.
The following are just some of the potential problems and the associated infertility levels:
Endometriosis infertility levels – Infertility levels with endometriosis can vary from moderate to high. Approximately 13% of women with endometriosis will have trouble conceiving. In cases of endometriosis where there is minimal scarring or limited areas affected by the condition, the level of infertility could still be quite low.
In women with more scarring of the uterus and fallopian tubes, infertility levels are higher. In these women, the need for surgery to eliminate blockage of the tubes could be necessary. Alternative treatments could include IVF, fertility drugs and intrauterine devices to improve infertility levels.
Progesterone infertility levels – Progesterone is one of the two fertility and pregnancy hormones that are essential for reproduction. Progesterone ensures that when the egg is released it is able to implant in the womb successfully and the uterus lining is not shed following conception.
Infertility levels in patients with low progesterone levels can be high and this problem most commonly occurs when the woman is in her late thirties or forties. Treatments to improve upon high infertility levels include suppositories, oral progestogen medications and the use of topical progesterone cream.
Testosterone infertility levels – High infertility levels can be caused in both males and females when there is an imbalance in the level of testosterone. In males, either too much or too little testosterone can result in the production of sufficient levels of sperm for conception being inhibited.
The use of pituitary stimulating hormones is the most common treatment option and this works to stimulate the production of sperm to improve the chances for conception. In females, the use of oral medication to improve oestrogen and progesterone levels will reduce high infertility levels.
Managing the causes of high infertility levels will help couples to overcome any barriers to conception and achieve their dream of having a child. Infertility levels can be of concern to couples of all ages, including those within the peak fertility age range.
