However, perhaps one of the most negative effects of smoking is against the fertility of humans. Unfortunately, problems with fertility affect both the males and the females in different capacity. Of course, the effect will be worse for females, since their ovaries and their uterus can be affected immensely due to the effects of smoking. Of course, smoking and fertility is still a controversial issue even today, as many people can recall that smoking was recommended by doctors in the 1960‘s for better health.

However, recent research shows that the effects of smoking and fertility may be even worse than before. In fact, for couples, the chance of a successful conception of a baby can be significantly reduced due to smoking. There are many reasons for this, as cigarette smoke contains many chemicals which are noxious and dangerous for the human body. Especially tar and nicotine are the two most harmful substances that are found in cigarettes.

According to a recent research by the University of New York, it has been shown that continuous smoking for 7 years or more in females can seriously lower the chances of conceiving. This is mainly due to the fact that nicotine can bind with the receptors of the various cells in the ovary and prevent the eggs from being inseminated by the male sperm cells. If you also add the effects of the tar and carbon dioxide with their own detrimental effects; you can see that how this effects fertility.

Of course, smoking and infertility is a concept that affects males as well as the females. Thus, you have to consider the fact that the male sperm quality as well as the quantity can be affected by smoking. In fact, a research conducted by Stockholm University also shows that males who smoke for more than 5 years that their fertility capacity can be affected by more than 22%.

Thus, if you think about it, you can quickly see that couples, in which both parties smoke, can be under serious threat when it comes to conceiving a baby. In fact, when both sides smoke, there could be more than 28% chances, that infertility problems can take place. Moreover, the chances of having a complication, even after conceiving the baby can also be high. The chances of miscarrying a baby greatly rise and moreover this unfortunate statistic goes up every year if that couples continues to smoke.  However, the good news is the fact that quitting smoking can immediately start to improve your chances of conceiving.
