Understanding Uterine Infertility
Uterine infertility is caused by the inability of the egg to implant and grow without impediment in the uterus.
Low levels of progesterone are one reason why this problem can arise and the treatment of this hormone imbalance is essential to ensure that the uterine lining remains intact so that development and growth can occur and the pregnancy can progress to full term.
Another common cause of uterine infertility is endometriosis, a condition where layers of thickened endometrial tissue grow and interconnect within the uterus. This problem can impair implantation and development of the embryo.
Treating progesterone levels is often quite straight forward, however treating endometriosis can be more complicated.
Progesterone and infertility
Low progesterone levels are a common problem in women in their thirties and forties and one of the most common reasons why they are unable to successfully conceive. To ensure the successful implantation of the egg in the uterus, a surge of progesterone is needed following fertilisation.
Menstruation and the shedding of the uterine wall occur when progesterone levels drop. Uterine infertility can be a problem when the individual has low levels of progesterone preventing implantation of the embryo in the uterine wall.
Treatment options and benefits
Synthetic progestogens are one option for increasing progesterone levels. This form of treatment is in fact similar to the oral contraceptive pill. To decrease the incidence of uterine infertility, the use of pills, shots, suppositories and creams can boost progesterone levels.
Applying natural progesterone as a topical cream is one of the more favoured options nowadays, as this is seen as a good alternative to the use of the synthetic progestogens.
Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Formulas have been shown to greatly assist this condition and are a preferred holistic way to treat this condition. One of the many ingredients normally used in the formulations are black cohosh.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition that occurs in the uterus and fallopian tubes. It can also be found in other parts of the body and endometrial tissue adhesions and lesions develop on the surface of organs. The body compensates for this by layering scar tissue around the lesions.
Endometriosis in the uterus and fallopian tubes could be mild enough that the woman conceives and carries the pregnancy without any problems. In more severe cases, the build up of scar tissue could be a cause of uterine infertility.
Uterine infertility and endometriosis treatment options
If the case is mild, the use of fertility drugs could be one solution to limit the effects of endometriosis and uterine infertility. These drugs will be prescribed by a physician and provide the woman with the assistance necessary to fall pregnant.
In more severe cases of endometriosis, the build up of scar tissue could be more pronounced and the resulting uterine infertility may require surgery, along with IVF and fertility drugs in order for the woman to be able to carry a pregnancy to term.
Acupuncture are very effective in treating mild cases of infertility. With more severe cases where infertility are caused by the scarring then unfortunately surgery will be the only option.
Uterine infertility is manageable with the help of a specialist physician or gynaecologist to give you the treatment and support necessary to conceive. With help from an expert, the best course of action can be decided upon and the necessary treatments provided and monitored to help overcome infertility, ensure conception and help the woman carry a pregnancy full term.
